I have such a fun and simple tutorial for you today. Turning old books into decor. I have seen so many cute ideas turning books into decor and this one has to be one of my faves. If you get squeamish with the thought of cutting up books this post may not be for you. You may not want to go further. I can’t make a promise that books were not harmed in the making of this project.
However, I do have to say it has the approval of my oldest daughter and, if you were to know anything about her, it is that she is a complete book fanatic. By this I mean she lives and breathes books. She has a ton of them and hates to lend them out to anyone, even her most trusted friends. You even fear for your own safety if you put a slight ripple in a page. So if she is able to love this then you may also. BTW, I actually used scrapbook paper in mine because it is what I had on hand – so don’t be too mad at me.
I’ll start with a pretty picture … that way you will realize just how fun it really is.
See! If you love books, here’s a fun way to decorate with them!
This is a very low cost (or free) project depending on what items you have around your house. For me – free! Can’t beat that!
You will need:
- An old book or scrapbook paper.
- Some punches – I used a few different ones. A scallop, 1″ circle and a 1- 3/8″ circle. Find a friend who crafts and borrow theirs. 🙂
- Styrofoam balls – different sizes. You can get these from the dollar store. A package is about $1.25.
- Glue gun – A necessity for so many things.
- Glue sticks – Dollar store for $1.25 a package
- Pencil or some object to shape and help with attaching the circles.
- Fake flower stems – Grab these at the dollar store. It doesn’t matter what the flowers look like because you are going to pop them off.
Here are the supplies I used, minus the flower stems. They were actually a last minute idea when I was photographing them.
Take a few minutes while watching your favourite Netflix show (I am loving Life in Pieces right now) and punch out a whole bunch of circles or scallops. The size of the circles will depend on the final outcome of the ball. I used the same size small foam ball on the three small ones, however, I used a 1 -3/8″ circle punch on one of them and it made it just slightly larger. The scalloped ones are done with the larger foam ball.
The amount of shapes you punch out will vary. It really depends on the size of ball and punch you are using as well as how tightly you pack them in there. In total I think I went through about 5 – 12×12″ pages of paper. Just punch out a whole bunch.
Next I took the time to shape them around the pencil (not sharpened) so I had a bunch ready to go. (Sorry, forgot to show the paper around the pencil 😛 )
Now carefully using your glue gun, (I am notorious for burning myself on mine multiple times during a project) place a small bit of glue on the ball or the end of the paper and, using the pencil, gently push it in place. Continue this process all around until it is completely covered. Glue gun works best for this because of the quick dry time.
I packed mine in nice and close because I wanted it to be very full. They are unbelievably durable. Trust me I tested it out. They are great to toss at your children when they aren’t paying attention to you.
Now once you are done sit back and admire just how stinkin’ cute these are. All those books you were thinking of getting rid of can now be used to decorate your home. I used them two ways.
This one just with an arrangement of different balls in a tray.
And this is where the flower stems come in. Just pop the heads off of the stems like when you were little and popped dandelion heads off, (that wasn’t just me, right?) and simply push the balls onto the ends of the stems to make them into an adorable flower arrangement. I think they kind of look like dandelions ready to blow in the wind.
I would love to see how you have used these in your decor. Post pictures below in the comments.
