Do you have any of those old metal TV trays kicking around that maybe you’ve had in your family since childhood, inherited from your grandmother or something, and thought – who would want those?! Well maybe now you won’t want to get rid of them. You can actually makeover those outdated TV trays and turn them into an inexpensive and cute table … one you will be proud to pull out when people come over.
The ones I have, have been in my family for as long as I can remember. I have hung onto them only because they are very handy to have around in a pinch when you need a place to set your drink on while watching TV. My girls use them a LOT to paint their nails!
Here is what one of the old tables look like. It’s so tacky! Notice the nail polish on it!
I have seriously debated getting rid of them and getting some nice new ones, but have never gotten around to it. They can be so expensive for what they are.
I figured there had to be something I could do with them. Anything would be better.
Cue some spray paint and shelf liner from the dollar store! Yep, that is all it took to transform these ugly little tables into something I am happy to actually have on display.
I used Rustoleum metallic silver spray paint from Home Depot. And I came across the shelf liner one day at the Dollar Tree.
I first gave everything a light sanding and wiped it clean, then I spray painted it in the garage (moving the vehicles out first, of course). Although we would prefer a silver truck over the red. 😛
A few coats later and time to dry and it was ready to add the shelf liner. I waited a good 24 hours for it to dry so I wouldn’t mess it up applying the liner. It felt like forever!
I cut the liner slightly bigger than the surface of the table so I could tuck it under the metal rim, hoping it wouldn’t peel up. Then used a metal ruler – only because it was what I had around and it was the perfect flatness to get under the lip. I was so excited to apply it that I forgot to take a picture of this part.
But here it is all done. (Ack!! My girls had better be careful when applying nail polish now!!)
A before and after.
Do you have any old TV trays kicking around your place? What would you do to fix them up?
