Before I decided to start a blog I re-did our mudroom. It was something that I have wanted to do since my girls were getting older and obtaining more shoes and their schedules were getting busier. I needed to update the mudroom for shoes and incorporate a command center into it to keep track of things.
The most important part of this project was the shoe storage. We had tons of shoes – what with there being three girls in the house. And we couldn’t just stop buying them! I mean really – what kind of a solution is that.
In order for us to store all these shoes that were gathering it was either build somewhere for them to go or pair them down! Well, what female in their right mind is going to pair down their perfectly good shoes? I mean come on! I needed to build in a shoe storage and soon. I had to set priorities… and decided that shoe storage was more important that coat storage. Well not really, I have lockers in my mudroom, a closet and a closet in the front hall right beside the mudroom so I was sure there would be enough storage for jackets. Ha! Also a problem for us. Lots of jackets to go with everything! So I also added more space for hanging coats and bags and took some of the space in the mudroom closet to build a tower for shoes.
Now I will take you on a short tour of the finished mudroom. Unfortunately I don’t have “before” photos of this room because I didn’t realize I would be sharing all this with anyone.
Here it is. The entrance to our house that gets used all the time. The dumping ground for shoes, jackets, backpacks and anything else that has been carried in from the outside. See the lockers at the far end, you would think that would be enough space for the girls coats, shoes and backpacks, but let me tell you, it fills up fast. I was always under the impression that those neat little hook things attached to the walls were for coats and bags. Silly me, apparently you just throw the coats into the locker and where they land is where they stay. Huh. Was my mom ever silly to teach me otherwise.
As I turn to the immediate right, this is the closet my husband and I built in for shoes. I thought it would be enough space to keep most of the shoes… again… I was wrong. But it sure holds a lot. I think after I got this finished my oldest daughter went out and purchased three new pairs of shoes. I have taught her well!!
I made the shelves so we could space them out depending on the height of the shoes we have. The bottom area is made to hold all the tall boots. And see that one small little shelf with the arrow pointing at it in the photo below, that is the husband shoe spot. It can fit three pairs nicely!
We just keep the seasonal jackets in this closet and move the others to the front closet or basement closet.
Next, here is the extra hooks I put in to hang all the extra jackets and bags. Again, thought that was the use for these but seems they still don’t always make it on them. Looks so nice when it is all clean with minimal jackets. But give it 30 minutes and everyone coming in with their stuff and you won’t be able to see the wall… or hooks… or floor for that matter. I added the second row of hooks to hang backpacks and dog leashes. There is a cute little doggy butt hook from Ikea for Bandit’s leash. And now that we have another dog I need to get one more for Rumour.
Moving along to the left are the lockers again. Three lockers and four people in the family. Guess the husband doesn’t get space here. 🙂 See how one might think that there is enough space for shoes and coats. In theory… yes.. in reality…no!
Now we keep circling to the left and I have added a nice little vinyl saying to my door. Awe I’m so sweet!
And last but not least! One of my favorite spots in here… my command center. It’s in the mudroom, out of the way and I think kinda pretty! I have used IKEA frames with scrapbooking paper and now everyone has their own message board (that I have yet to label). The two top frames I made into dry erase board calendars and some catch all wire baskets. Plus my pretty magnetic board I got from a Christmas craft fair one year.
Well that is really all there is to my mudroom. Hope you enjoyed the tour.
What do you use for shoe and coat storage? Do you find it is enough space?
